Wild Kiwi Cabin – A Hidden Gem in Whangārei Heads

Sometimes the best stays are the ones that almost didn’t happen.

On our recent trip north, Craig and I stumbled across what turned out to be an absolute gem in the stunning Whangārei Heads area on Airbnb. Initially, the cabin wasn’t available for our first night, so we booked elsewhere. But there was something about it — and the genuinely warm, friendly communication from the owner, Kathy — that kept pulling us back. So we booked it for the following night.

That decision? One of the best we’ve made.

First Guests & First Impressions

As it turned out, we were their very first guests — and we truly felt like we’d lucked in. Experiencing the Wild Kiwi Cabin for the first time was pretty special. Tucked away in a quiet corner just off Whangārei Heads Road, the location is spot on. It offers stunning views across the bay while being set back enough to feel peaceful and private. Backing onto native bush, it holds a prime position — close to the waterfront for easy walks, yet removed enough to feel immersed in nature.

On arrival, Kathy and Paul were there to greet us personally and show us up to the cabin. Set behind the main house, it has its own outdoor space and a beautifully positioned spa pool raised high enough to capture sweeping views over the bay — while still maintaining complete privacy.

Thoughtfully Designed & Beautifully Finished

From the moment we stepped inside, it was clear this cabin had been thoughtfully designed. Every detail has been considered, ensuring that whether you’re staying one night or a week, you have everything you need.

  • A well-equipped kitchenette for preparing meals or snacks

  • Wine and beer glasses ready for sunset drinks

  • A covered outdoor dining area

  • Fly screens on all doors and windows so you can enjoy the fresh air (and the sounds of local birdlife — including the elusive kiwi!) without the bugs

  • Air conditioning for comfort year-round

And then there’s the spa pool.

After a full day walking the Smugglers Bay loop, fishing, and swimming in the surrounding bays, soaking in the spa while listening to kiwis rustling in the bush behind us was pure magic. Falling asleep to those same sounds of native birdlife made it feel like we were truly part of the landscape.

Craig even made the most of starting his morning with a coffee in the spa pool — and honestly, it’s a novelty we highly recommend. There’s something pretty special about watching the light rise over the bay from warm bubbling water.

Hosts Who Go Above and Beyond

What truly elevates a stay from great to unforgettable is the people — and Kathy and Paul are exceptional hosts. Warm, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about the area, they were always happy to suggest local must-sees, hiking tracks, fishing spots, and swimming bays.

As an added bonus, they offer kayaks and paddleboards for guests to use on the bay — such a fantastic way to explore the water and make the most of the location.

We were so impressed that we booked again the following week on our way back down from Northland. And once again, we made the most of all the little luxuries that make the Wild Kiwi Cabin so special.

The Perfect Base for Adventure — Or Relaxation

Whether you’re looking for:

  • A relaxing night (or longer) away

  • A base to hike the surrounding tracks and mountains

  • Time fishing, swimming, or exploring the ocean

  • Or simply a peaceful escape immersed in nature

The Whangārei Heads Wild Kiwi Cabin ticks every box.

If you’re heading to the area, do yourself a favour and book it. We’re so glad we trusted our instinct and went back — it’s one of those places you won’t stop thinking about long after you leave.

Get it booked. You won’t look back. 🌿
