5 Reasons I Love Living in Our 2-Bedroom Mezzanine Timber Cabin

Journey to a Simpler Life Series

Living in a cabin tiny home has completely changed the way I think about my health, happiness, and what I truly value in life.

Our 6 x 4 metre, 2-bedroom timber cabin with a mezzanine floor is significantly smaller than a traditional house, but it feels bigger in all the ways that matter.

The open-plan design creates a wonderful sense of space, while the mezzanine loft adds character, warmth, and a cosy retreat that I proudly call home.

When people hear the words "tiny home," they often think about what you have to give up. The reality is quite the opposite.

Living in a smaller space has helped me gain more freedom, more clarity, and more time for the things that truly matter.

Here are five reasons why I absolutely love living in our timber cabin:

1.

It Encourages a Simpler, Less Stressful Lifestyle

One of the biggest benefits of cabin living is that it naturally encourages simplicity.

When you only have a limited amount of space, every item in your home needs to earn its place. There simply isn't room for endless clutter, impulse purchases, or keeping things "just in case."

As a result, I've become much more intentional about what I own. Instead of accumulating stuff, I focus on experiences, memories, personal growth, and spending quality time with the kids and other half.

Living with less has reduced stress and helped me appreciate what I already have. It's a constant reminder that happiness doesn't come from owning more—it comes from needing less.

2.

Cleaning and Maintenance Take Minutes, Not Hours

Before moving into our cabin, household chores seemed to take up a huge amount of time.

Now, cleaning the entire cabin can be done in a fraction of the time it used to take in a larger property. Less floor space means less vacuuming, fewer surfaces to dust, and less general maintenance.

The time saved is invaluable.

Instead of spending entire weekends cleaning and tidying, I can focus on exercising, studying, spending time with the kids, going for walks, or working on projects that bring me joy and fulfilment.

A smaller home gives me more time to live life rather than maintain it.

3.

The Natural Timber Creates a Calming Environment

There's something incredibly comforting about being surrounded by natural wood.

The timber walls create a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels peaceful all year round. The cabin has a cosy character that's difficult to replicate in a conventional house.

Every morning, I wake up feeling connected to nature. The natural textures and earthy tones help create a calming environment that encourages mindfulness and helps me stay grounded in the present moment.

In a world that often feels busy and overwhelming, our cabin feels like a little sanctuary once the doors shut.

It's a place where I can recharge mentally, physically, and emotionally.

4.

It Supports Better Financial Freedom

One of the most overlooked advantages of tiny home living is the financial freedom it can provide and that very much aligns to one of my core values ‘Freedom’.

A smaller home generally means lower running costs. Heating, maintenance, repairs, and household expenses are often reduced compared to a larger property.

This doesn't just save money—it creates options.

The money saved can be invested into experiences, education, health, travel, family activities, or future goals rather than being tied up in maintaining a large home.

For me, financial freedom isn't about having more money. It's about having more choices and greater peace of mind.

Living in our cabin supports that goal perfectly.

5.

It Encourages Regular Decluttering and Intentional Living

One thing I've learned very quickly is that clutter accumulates wherever there is space for it.

Living in a smaller home means regular decluttering becomes a natural part of life. Every few months, I'm encouraged to review what we own and ask a simple question:

"Does this still serve a purpose?"

If the answer is no, it's time to let it go.

This habit has extended beyond physical possessions. It has also encouraged me to evaluate commitments, habits, and routines that no longer align with the life I want to live.

In many ways, our cabin has taught me that creating space in your home often creates space in your mind as well.

More Than Just a Home

Tiny home living isn't about sacrificing comfort. It's about gaining freedom, reducing stress, lowering costs, and creating a home that supports your wellbeing rather than overwhelming it.

For me, our timber cabin isn't simply a place to live.

It's a lifestyle choice that aligns perfectly with my Eat Clean, Health and Dream philosophy:

Live simply. Nourish your body. Care for your mind.

Make space for your dreams to grow.

Every day, I'm grateful for the lessons this lifestyle continues to teach me about gratitude, simplicity, and intentional living.
