The Struggle to Live Simply in Today’s World

In a society that constantly tells us to do more, buy more, and scroll more, striving to live simply has become a quietly revolutionary act.

The idea of stripping life back to the essentials—focusing on health, family, and meaningful experiences—sounds beautiful in theory.

But in practice, it’s anything but easy, especially in the UK where modern life comes wrapped in digital, social, and economic pressures.

The Digital Dilemma

Technology is meant to make life easier, yet it often does the opposite. Smartphones, social media, and online schooling have become both tools and chains. For parents trying to foster a simple lifestyle, this presents a unique challenge. Children’s homework is increasingly online, reading is moving to apps, and educational platforms demand time and attention. It’s difficult to encourage your kids to play outside, explore nature, or enjoy quiet, unplugged time when their world is dominated by screens.

Even adults feel the pull. Social media constantly bombards us with curated snapshots of other people’s lives, making the idea of “simple living” feel like a deprivation rather than a choice. Every scroll invites comparison: “Why don’t I have that? Why aren’t we doing that?” The pursuit of simplicity, which should be peaceful, becomes fraught with pressure.

Economic Pressures

Living simply isn’t free. In the UK, the cost of housing, childcare, and food can make even basic living feel like a luxury. Choosing to downsize your home, buy locally sourced food, or avoid consumer culture often clashes with practical financial realities. Organic groceries, eco-friendly products, and community-supported farms are desirable, but sometimes out of reach for families trying to balance bills and the rising cost of living.

Moreover, the work culture itself often stands in opposition to simplicity. Long hours, commutes, and job insecurity mean time—the very essence of a simple life—is constantly under threat. The dream of spending more evenings cooking wholesome meals or playing board games with your children can be replaced by screens, takeaways, and exhaustion.

Social and Cultural Expectations

There’s also a subtle societal pressure in the UK that complicates the journey toward simplicity. From “keeping up with the Joneses” in suburban neighbourhoods to the cultural expectation of busy, over-scheduled lives, opting out can feel isolating. Friends and relatives may unintentionally undermine your efforts, questioning why you don’t subscribe to certain trends, or why you prioritize calm and mindfulness over the latest tech or social events.

Even public spaces aren’t immune. Urban living often restricts access to green spaces, clean air, and community gardens. If you want your children to experience nature, you may have to drive, fight traffic, or pay for entry to parks—complicating what “simple” life should ideally offer.

Finding the Path Forward

Acknowledging the obstacles is the first step in reclaiming simplicity. While the societal, economic, and digital pressures are real, small, intentional changes can create pockets of simplicity even in a complex world. Setting screen-free times, embracing local produce markets, prioritizing outdoor family activities, and curating social media consumption can slowly tilt life back toward balance.

The pursuit of simplicity isn’t about perfection. It’s about making deliberate choices that align with your values, even when the world seems determined to make things complicated.

For parents, this often means modeling resilience and intention, showing children that meaningful experiences are more valuable than constant digital engagement or consumer excess.

Ultimately, simplicity in today’s society is less about the absence of obstacles and more about learning to navigate them gracefully. Even in a busy UK life, it’s possible to carve out a slower, more intentional path—one mindful meal, one outdoor adventure, one mindful moment at a time.
