Windy Birthday Walk in Bude, Cornwall

When you have a February birthday in the UK, you can almost guarantee one thing: it’ll either be freezing cold, wet and windy — or all three.
So what do you do when you want to celebrate without spending a fortune, especially with teens and tweens in tow? Living in North Devon, we had that exact quandary. Ordinarily, I might choose somewhere a little further afield — perhaps the Eden Project or an aquarium adventure — but neither Craig nor I fancied a two-hour drive each way. And by the time everyone was finally ready, it was already midday.
So instead, we opted for something beautifully simple: a drive over the border into North Cornwall for a windy birthday walk in Bude.
Canal Walks, Causeways & Winter Sea Air
We parked near the canal and walked along the towpath towards the causeway and point. Luckily, the tide was out, which meant we could explore a little further and enjoy the exposed rock pools.
Three of the kids joined us, and despite the blustery conditions, they fully embraced it — skimming stones, clambering up the little steps, peering into rock pools and taking in the views across Summerleaze Beach and the surrounding bays.
In many ways, we were recreating a memory. Four years ago, I’d done almost exactly the same thing for my 40th birthday — just with the boys. This time, the weather wasn’t a full-on storm, but it was certainly windy and constantly threatening rain. Still, there’s something invigorating about wild Cornish air in winter. It blows away the cobwebs and makes you feel gloriously alive.
Warming Up at The Olive Tree
Eventually, rosy cheeks turned to cold fingers, and we all agreed it was time to warm up. Our trusted favourite along the canal is The Olive Tree.

What started as a quick stop for a hot drink soon escalated into a proper feed — mainly because my youngest absolutely loves his food and will always find room for something tasty (thankfully he’s ultra-active to match!).
While scanning the menu, I spotted something that made my gluten-free heart very happy: all their fryers and batter are gluten free. A definite win. Then I saw monkfish scampi on the specials board. Decision made.
The monkfish scampi was delicious — lightly crisped, perfectly cooked and incredibly satisfying after battling coastal winds. As usual, both Craig and I ended up sharing with the kids. Apparently, parental meals are always more appealing!
With full bellies, warm drinks in hand and wind-swept hair slowly settling, it was the perfect end to a simple but memorable birthday outing.
Why Bude is Perfect for a Budget-Friendly Birthday
Free outdoor adventure
Fresh sea air and space for teens to roam
Rock pools and beaches to explore at low tide
Cosy cafés for warming up
No long, exhausting drive
Sometimes birthdays don’t need big attractions or expensive tickets. Sometimes they just need wild weather, family laughter, and good food shared around a table.
This February birthday might have been windy, but it was filled with exactly what matters — movement, memories and a very yummy gluten-free feast to finish it off.
And honestly? I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
