The Coastal Walk from Waihi Beach to Orokawa Bay

One of the highlights of our time in Waihi Beach was the stunning coastal walk to Orokawa Bay. We’ve done variations of this walk in the past, but this time we tackled the entire track with fishing rods and towels in tow, turning it into a full day coastal adventure.

The walk begins at the northern end of Waihi Beach, where a well-marked trail climbs gently through coastal vegetation. From the first lookout, the Pacific stretches endlessly ahead, with waves crashing against rocky outcrops below. The path undulates along the clifftops, alternating between open panoramic views and sheltered bushland.

After about 30 minutes, the track descends toward Orokawa Bay, revealing a secluded crescent of golden sand framed by pohutukawa trees. Often far quieter than Waihi Beach, Orokawa feels like a hidden paradise—perfect for a peaceful swim, casting a line, or spreading out a towel and simply soaking it all in.

The walk is suitable for most fitness levels, though sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rain. Whether you’re after a gentle hike or a relaxed beach day with a sense of adventure, the Waihi Beach to Orokawa Bay walk is an experience not to be missed.
