Five Minutes Outside: Small Habit, Big Impact

This morning, as I sit in my office, looking out at a grey, drizzly sky with the wind beginning to pick up, it feels a world away from the brighter days we’ve enjoyed recently. It would be easy—very easy—to stay tucked inside, wrapped in warmth and routine. But I’ve already made a point of stepping outside today.

Not for long. Not for anything dramatic. Just a few minutes.
Like most mornings, I was up around 6am, letting the dog out. Instead of rushing back in, I paused. I stood, watched, breathed. It helps that I can see the sea from where I stand, and that short walk down to my garden office naturally nudges me outdoors. But even without that view, the habit matters far more than the scenery.
And later today, despite a busy schedule and less-than-inviting weather, I’ll do it again—step outside, be present, and take a moment.
Because here’s the truth:
your body and mind don’t need perfect weather—just a little bit of outside.
Why Even Five Minutes Matters
We often think wellness requires big chunks of time—long walks, full workouts, perfectly planned routines.
But stepping outside for just five minutes can:
Reset your mind – Fresh air and natural light help reduce stress and mental fatigue
Boost your mood – Even on grey days, daylight supports serotonin production
Support better sleep – Exposure to natural light helps regulate your circadian rhythm
Encourage movement – A small step outdoors often leads to more activity
Create a pause in your day – A moment to breathe, reflect, and just be
It’s not about doing more. It’s about doing something simple, consistently.
It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
Let’s be honest—standing outside in drizzle and wind isn’t exactly appealing. But it’s real life. And building habits that work despite the weather is what makes them sustainable.
Five minutes outside on a gloomy day still counts. It still benefits you. In fact, there’s something grounding about experiencing the elements as they are, rather than waiting for ideal conditions.
How Could You Step Outside Today?
It doesn’t need to be complicated. Look for natural opportunities already within your day:
Walk to pick the kids up instead of driving
Park a little further away or get off the bus a stop earlier
Take a short walk at lunch, even if it’s just around the block
Step into your garden, balcony, or terrace with a cuppa
Pop to the shop on foot instead of jumping in the car
Simply stand outside your front door and take a few deep breaths
These moments add up. They create space in your day that benefits both your physical and mental wellbeing.
A Gentle Reminder
You don’t need sunshine. You don’t need time you feel you don’t have. You don’t need perfect motivation.
You just need a few minutes.
So today, whatever the weather is doing where you are—step outside anyway.
Pause. Breathe. Notice.
Your body will thank you. Your mind will thank you. And tonight, even your sleep might thank you too.
