A Few Rainy Days in Waihi Beach – What to Do When the Heavens Open 🌧️

Waihi Beach is one of those places that keeps calling us back. We’ve been here a few times now and every visit reminds us why we love it – long stretches of sand, salty air, great surf, and that relaxed coastal vibe that instantly slows you down.

This time, though, it’s just myself and Craig. No kids, no schedules, just a couple of days away. The only catch? The weather had other ideas. Wind, rain, and grey skies rolled in, closing the beaches for swimming and surf. When the ocean isn’t an option and fishing’s already been ticked off, what else is there to do?

Turns out, quite a lot.

Embracing Waihi Beach on a Rainy Day

Rainy days at the beach can actually be a blessing in disguise. With fewer people around, Waihi Beach feels quieter, moodier, and somehow more intimate. It’s the perfect excuse to slow right down and explore what’s nearby.

Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with kids in tow, there’s plenty to keep you entertained when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

For Couples (or a Child-Free Getaway Like Ours)

Athenree Hot Springs – Our Favourite Little Find

This is hands down one of the best discoveries we’ve made in the area. We first found Athenree Holiday Park and Hot Springs when we camped here a couple of years back, and it’s become a must-visit ever since.

Tucked just 10 minutes from Waihi Beach, the natural hot pools are perfect on a wet, windy day. There’s something pretty magical about soaking in warm mineral water while the rain falls around you. It’s peaceful, relaxing, and exactly what you need when the weather shuts down beach plans.

Tip: Go earlier in the day or later in the evening for a quieter soak.

Cafés & Long Lunches

Rainy days are made for coffee and good food. Waihi Beach and nearby Waihi township have some great little cafés where you can linger over brunch or enjoy a long lunch without rushing anywhere.

Scenic Drives

Even in the rain, the drive around the coastline and countryside is beautiful. Head towards Katikati or take a slow drive inland and enjoy the rolling green hills, misty views, and hidden roadside stops.

Things to Do on Your Own

Walks (Even Short Ones)

You don’t need a full beach walk to enjoy the outdoors. Short strolls between showers, especially around the estuary or quieter streets near the beach, can be surprisingly refreshing.

Reading, Writing & Switching Off

Rainy beach days are perfect for catching up on reading, journaling, or simply listening to the rain with a coffee in hand. Sometimes doing “nothing” is exactly what the trip needs.

Explore Local Shops

Pop into Waihi township and browse the local shops, second-hand stores, and small boutiques. It’s a nice way to spend an hour or two when the weather’s miserable outside.

Travelling with Kids? Rainy-Day Ideas

If you’re visiting Waihi Beach with kids and the weather turns, there’s still plenty to keep little (and big) people entertained:

  • Gold Discovery Centre & Museum (Waihi) – interactive and educational, perfect for curious minds

  • Board games or movie afternoons back at your accommodation

  • Hot pools at Athenree – family-friendly and a hit with kids

  • Easy bush walks between rain showers

  • Ice cream or café treats – because holidays still count, rain or shine

When the Weather Clears (Even Just a Bit)

Keep an eye on the forecast. Even a short break in the rain can mean:

  • A quick beach walk

  • Rock pooling

  • Watching the waves crash (sometimes more dramatic in rough weather)

  • Sunset skies that surprise you after a grey day

Final Thoughts

Waihi Beach doesn’t lose its charm when it rains – it just shows a different side of itself. While we’d always choose sunshine and surf, there’s something comforting about slowing down, soaking in hot pools, exploring nearby towns, and enjoying each other’s company without a packed itinerary.

So if you find yourself here with the rain pouring down and the beach off-limits, don’t write the day off. Grab a coffee, head to Athenree Hot Springs, and lean into the slower pace. You might just love Waihi Beach even more because of it.

Have you discovered any hidden gems around Waihi Beach on a rainy day?
