A Cabin Made for the Coast - The Reel Haus, Okiato, Russell

The Bay of Islands—and Northland more broadly—has always held a special place in my heart. Every visit feels like a homecoming, and I always try to make the most of whatever time I’m lucky enough to spend up there.

This most recent trip with Craig didn’t quite go to plan thanks to good old Mother Nature and the tropical storm she decided to throw at the east coast. Still, we made it north, albeit for a shorter stay than originally planned—and as usual for us, the accommodation booking was completely last-minute. When I say last-minute, I mean on the day, just a couple of hours before arrival.

While trawling the usual booking platforms, one place caught my eye: The Reel Haus in Okiato. I thought I’d see if we could book directly—and luck was on our side. They have their own website, and after a quick look and a WhatsApp message, we were booked in.

Communication was prompt and friendly, directions came through quickly, and before long we were crossing on the car ferry from Opua to Okiato. Moments later, we were pulling up at The Reel Haus.

The first thing that greets you is an incredible walkway mural featuring the awesome kingfish—it’s absolutely stunning and sets the tone straight away. I had already seen photos of the cabin, so I thought I knew what to expect, but even so, our expectations were well and truly exceeded.

The finishing touches and décor are beautifully done—stylish, creative, and thoughtful without feeling overdone.

One of the real luxuries of this cabin is the private outdoor space. With its decking, greenery, and retreat-like feel, it offers a gorgeous view over the bay and quickly became one of our favourite places to unwind. Inside, it truly felt like a home away from home.

Everything you could need for a short stay—or something much longer—is provided: a proper pod coffee machine, washer/dryer, dishwasher, and BBQ grill included.

We stayed during warm, mostly lovely weather with the odd bout of rain, but The Reel Haus would be just as perfect in the cooler months. A particularly lovely touch is the log burner in the living room, complete with logs provided—cosy nights sorted.

The cabin is full of luxurious and thoughtful details. The artwork and crafts even come with QR codes, giving insight into the creators and their history. Add in heated bathroom floors and countless other small touches, and it’s clear just how much care has gone into creating this space.

On arrival, we were welcomed with a bottle of wine from a local vineyard and chocolates from a Kerikeri-based chocolatier—both thoroughly enjoyed and very much appreciated by Craig and me. Karin, one of the owners, also checked in shortly after to make sure everything was perfect and to see if we needed anything.

After unpacking and settling in for our four-night stay, we enjoyed a glass of wine on the deck before wandering down to a nearby bay before dinner. As always, we were on the lookout for fishing spots—and I was constantly scanning the water and horizon, hoping to spot some marine life.

The local birdlife is ever-present, with sounds drifting through the cabin and garden at all hours of the day. As evening draws in, you can even hear the elusive calls of kiwi, which only added to the magic of this already idyllic location. It truly ticked every box—and then some.

Early mornings were a highlight for me. Working and writing as the light crept in, coffee in hand, with that bay view stretching out ahead—it definitely boosted both productivity and inspiration.

The Reel Haus also makes an ideal base for exploring. From here, it’s easy to discover Russell’s beaches and bays, catch the vehicle or foot ferry over to Paihia for a wander or an early dinner, or head out on local tracks and walks (many with fishing spots along the way).

After full days of exploring, it was always a pleasure to return to such a comfortable and welcoming space.

With a fully equipped kitchen and BBQ, we were able to prepare and cook wholesome meals, including some freshly caught fish.

The owners—and even local neighbours—were incredibly helpful, especially when it came to sharing fishing spot tips and walking ideas, we were able to make the most of our time. Those local insights made a real difference and were hugely appreciated, especially the fishing spot recommendations by Craig.

The Reel Haus is an amazingly creative, thoughtfully designed, and highly practical cabin. Whether you’re chasing fish, exploring the coastline, or simply wanting a peaceful base with direct access to the bay

We will absolutely be returning and recommending it to others. It offers everything you could need for a short escape or a longer break in the stunning Bay of Islands, allowing you to truly experience all that this really special part of New Zealand has to offer.

Whatever season you’re planning to visit, I’d highly recommend checking out The Reel Haus in Okiato directly at:👉 https://www.reelhaus.co.nz/
